Chords in G♭ major

Build a chord on each note of the scale, using only notes from the key, and you get the seven chords of G♭ major:

The three major chords, G♭, C♭ and D♭, carry most songs in G♭ major. The three minor ones, A♭m, B♭m and E♭m, add the darker colors. F° is diminished and rarely used on its own.

With a 7th added, the chords become:

Stack more notes from the key on top of the 7ths and you get the lush chords of neo-soul, R&B and lo-fi. These are the ones that sound good in G♭ major; the rest clash.

Chords from outside G♭ major

Songs often borrow a chord from outside the key for color. Bm, D and E come from F♯ minor. A♭7, B♭7 and E♭7 are secondary dominants: 7th chords that pull hard toward one of the key's own chords.

G♭ major key signature

G♭ major has 6 flats: B♭, E♭, A♭, D♭, G♭ and C♭. They're written in that order at the start of every line of music, so every B, E, A, D, G and C is played flat unless the music says otherwise.

  • Relative minor: E♭ minor. It uses exactly the same notes, starting from E♭. Songs move between the two easily, and key finders often mix them up.
  • Parallel minor: F♯ minor. G♭ minor would need double flats, so it's written as F♯ minor (3 sharps), which sounds the same.
  • Next door on the circle of fifths: D♭ major (5 flats) and C♭ major (7 flats). Each shares all but one note with G♭ major, so a song can move there smoothly.
