The E minor scale

The E minor scale (natural minor) is E, F♯, G, A, B, C and D. Every natural minor scale climbs in the same steps: whole, half, whole, whole, half, whole, whole.

Two variations are common in E minor:

  • Harmonic minor: E, F♯, G, A, B, C and D♯. The 7th is raised to D♯, which gives the scale its pull back to E.
  • Melodic minor: E, F♯, G, A, B, C♯ and D♯. The 6th and 7th are both raised (C♯ and D♯) going up; classical players come down on the natural minor.

Chords in E minor

Build a chord on each note of the scale, using only notes from the key, and you get the seven chords of E minor:

Em, Am and Bm are the minor chords; G, C and D are the major ones. Many songs in E minor swap Bm for B (B, D♯ and F♯), the major V from the harmonic minor, because it leads home to Em more strongly.

With a 7th added, the chords become:

Stack more notes from the key on top of the 7ths and you get the lush chords of neo-soul, R&B and lo-fi. These are the ones that sound good in E minor; the rest clash.

Chords from outside E minor

Songs often borrow a chord from outside the key for color. A and E come from E major, and F, half a step above home, is the dark sound of drill and trap. E7 and F♯7 are secondary dominants: 7th chords that pull hard toward one of the key's own chords.

E minor key signature

E minor has 1 sharp: F♯. They're written in that order at the start of every line of music, so every F is played sharp unless the music says otherwise.

  • Relative major: G major. It uses exactly the same notes, starting from G. Songs move between the two easily, and key finders often mix them up.
  • Parallel major: E major. The same home note with the other mood (4 sharps). Borrowing a chord from it is a classic way to add color.
  • Next door on the circle of fifths: B minor (2 sharps) and A minor (no sharps or flats). Each shares all but one note with E minor, so a song can move there smoothly.
