The A♭ minor scale

The A♭ minor scale (natural minor) is A♭, B♭, C♭, D♭, E♭, F♭ and G♭. Every natural minor scale climbs in the same steps: whole, half, whole, whole, half, whole, whole.

Two variations are common in A♭ minor:

  • Harmonic minor: A♭, B♭, C♭, D♭, E♭, F♭ and G. The 7th is raised to G, which gives the scale its pull back to A♭.
  • Melodic minor: A♭, B♭, C♭, D♭, E♭, F and G. The 6th and 7th are both raised (F and G) going up; classical players come down on the natural minor.

Chords in A♭ minor

Build a chord on each note of the scale, using only notes from the key, and you get the seven chords of A♭ minor:

A♭m, D♭m and E♭m are the minor chords; C♭, F♭ and G♭ are the major ones. Many songs in A♭ minor swap E♭m for E♭ (E♭, G and B♭), the major V from the harmonic minor, because it leads home to A♭m more strongly.

With a 7th added, the chords become:

Stack more notes from the key on top of the 7ths and you get the lush chords of neo-soul, R&B and lo-fi. These are the ones that sound good in A♭ minor; the rest clash.

Chords from outside A♭ minor

Songs often borrow a chord from outside the key for color. D♭ and A♭ come from A♭ major, and A, half a step above home, is the dark sound of drill and trap. A♭7 and B♭7 are secondary dominants: 7th chords that pull hard toward one of the key's own chords.

A♭ minor key signature

A♭ minor has 7 flats: B♭, E♭, A♭, D♭, G♭, C♭ and F♭. They're written in that order at the start of every line of music, so every B, E, A, D, G, C and F is played flat unless the music says otherwise.

  • Relative major: C♭ major. It uses exactly the same notes, starting from C♭. Songs move between the two easily, and key finders often mix them up.
  • Parallel major: A♭ major. The same home note with the other mood (4 flats). Borrowing a chord from it is a classic way to add color.
  • Next door on the circle of fifths: E♭ minor (6 flats) and C♯ minor (4 sharps). Each shares all but one note with A♭ minor, so a song can move there smoothly.
