C major has no sharps or flats, so it is where the piano starts and where most chord charts are written first. Its seven chords are C, Dm, Em, F, G, Am and B°, and three of them, C, F and G, carry most songs on their own. A minor is the relative minor with the same notes; C minor is the parallel minor for a darker verse. Because everything is white keys, C major is the key to learn a progression in before moving it anywhere else.
