How to change the key of a song

  1. Drop in the song (MP3, WAV, M4A or FLAC). It's read in your browser, never uploaded.
  2. See its key. The changer finds the song's key, the same way our key finder does.
  3. Pick the new key, or move it up or down in semitones. The tempo stays the same.
  4. Play it to hear the change, then download it as a WAV.

When to change a song's key

  • To sing it. Move a song down a step or two to fit your voice, then practise or record over it.
  • To mix it with another track. Shift one song to the other's key, or to a key next to it on the Camelot wheel, so they blend.
  • To fit a sample to your song. Move a sample into your project's key before you drop it into your DAW.

Small shifts, up to two or three semitones, sound natural. Bigger ones start to change the character of voices.

Semitones and keys

Each semitone is one step on the piano, white or black key. Two semitones up turns C major into D major, and three down turns C major into A major. Every key's notes and chords are on our key pages.

Questions

Does changing the key change the tempo?

Not here. The changer shifts the pitch and keeps the song at its own speed. If you want both to move together, like a record played faster or slower, use sped up or slowed + reverb.

How do I know what key a song is in?

Drop it in: the changer shows the key it finds before you change anything. You can also use the key finder.

How many semitones should I shift to sing a song?

Usually one to three. Try going down until the highest note feels easy, then check the lowest still sounds clear.

Is my song uploaded?

No. Everything happens in your browser. The song never leaves your computer.

Can I post a changed version of someone else's song?

Only with permission from whoever owns it. For your own songs, you can release the new version through your distributor like any other release.
